Composed especially the Duo Contemporain (Henri Bok, bass clarinet, and Miguel Bernat, percussion), who premiered it during their 1995 tour of Australia, Enyato IV is in three short movements: two radiant dances each marked Giocoso (playful) framing an introspective recitative (Profondo e misterioso).
The generic title Enyato is extracted from Edwards’ maninya text, an arbitrary nonsense poem dating from 1981, which has had a formative influence on much of his music. Through their musical associations, the ‘words’ maninya and enyato have acquired the meanings dance-chant and contrast, respectively.
Enyato IV was commissioned by Eva Griffith in memory of Heinz Harant
